Asphalt Shingles: The Most Popular Choice for Good Reason
About 80% of homes in Central Kentucky have asphalt shingle roofs, and there’s a reason for that. Modern architectural shingles (sometimes called dimensional shingles) are a significant upgrade over the old 3-tab shingles many homes still have.
Pros: Affordable upfront cost, wide variety of colors and styles, relatively easy to repair, strong warranties available (up to lifetime with premium brands like Owens Corning), and most roofing contractors are experienced with them.
Cons: Shorter lifespan than metal (typically 20-30 years), can be vulnerable to high winds if not properly installed, and dark colors absorb more heat in summer.
Our recommendation: For most Central Kentucky homeowners, Owens Corning Duration shingles offer the best balance of durability, aesthetics, and value. They’re rated for 130 mph winds and come with excellent warranty coverage. This is what we install exclusively at Black Ridge Roofing.
Metal Roofing: Long-Lasting but Higher Upfront Cost
Metal roofing has been gaining popularity in Kentucky, especially standing seam metal roofs on farmhouses and modern homes.
Pros: Extremely durable (40-70 year lifespan), excellent in heavy rain and snow, energy efficient because it reflects heat, fire resistant, and environmentally friendly since it’s recyclable.
Cons: Higher upfront cost (typically 2-3x asphalt), can be noisy during heavy rain without proper insulation, finding experienced installers is harder, and repairs can be more complex.
Our take: Metal roofing makes the most sense if you plan to stay in your home for 20+ years and want a roof you’ll likely never have to replace again. It’s also great for homes with steep pitches where shingle installation can be challenging.
What About Slate and Tile?
You’ll see slate roofs on some older, historic homes in Lexington and the Bluegrass region. While beautiful and incredibly long-lasting (100+ years), slate is extremely heavy and expensive. Your home’s structure needs to be able to support the weight, and very few contractors in Central Kentucky specialize in slate work.
Clay and concrete tile roofs are uncommon in our area and generally better suited to warmer, drier climates. For most Kentucky homeowners, they’re not the best fit.

How long do you plan to live in this home? If you’re staying long-term, investing in higher-quality materials pays off. If you might sell in 5-10 years, quality asphalt shingles give you the best return on investment.
What’s your budget? Asphalt shingles range from roughly $8,000-$15,000 for a typical home. Metal roofing starts around $15,000-$25,000+.
What does your neighborhood look like? If every home on your street has asphalt shingles, a metal roof might look out of place. Consider curb appeal and resale value.
Does your HOA have restrictions? Some homeowners associations in the Lexington area restrict roofing materials and colors. Check before making a decision.
